Raymond Chaillan

While some people spend their entire career at the same company, others, in contrast, have itchy feet and cannot help but sail toward new horizons. Moreover, this desire to express one's skills through various companies seems increasingly rooted in customs. In this sense, Raymond Chaillan was a precursor. Born in 1935, he never stopped putting his talents to work for different companies. A look back at his career, his works and his creative personality.

The early career of Raymond Chaillan

Raymond Chaillan was born in Nice, not far from the world capital of perfumery, in the Provence region. He then spent his childhood in Barrême, a town located nearby and surrounded by fields of lavender and sage. Indeed, Raymond Chaillan remembers very well his early years spent amid the lands of his grandfather, who was a beekeeper and worked with flowers. Raymond Chaillan initially turned toward the scientific field. He first completed a preparatory class in mathematics before obtaining an ENSIA engineering degree. Nevertheless, Raymond Chaillan did not seem clearly resolved to leave his native land. He first got hired at Antoine Chiris, a perfumer in Grasse. There, he gradually climbed the ranks and slowly became a perfumer. Raymond Chaillan stayed at this company for six years. Then, as if to further broaden his knowledge, he worked with Jacques Jantzen. However, at that time, Raymond Chaillan did not yet have real recognition in the perfumery sector. It was only in 1969 that his career truly began.

The career of Raymond Chaillan

It was in 1969 that Raymond Chaillan joined his first major perfumery group. Indeed, he left the Provence region to take up a position as perfumer within the company Roure Bertrant Dupont, in Paris. He arrived at this company as a replacement for Michel Hy and began collaborating with Louis Amic. He stayed at this company for 10 years. He then joined the company Firmenich, where he started as a simple perfumer. Nevertheless, through perseverance, he grew his reputation and was recruited by Dragoco as director of the laboratories of their perfumery division. In 1988, Raymond Chaillan changed companies once again. He took up a position as director of perfumery research at J&E Sozio. Then, in 1993, he became director at Argeville. At the same time, from 1995 to 1997, he was named president of the Société Française des Parfumeurs. With such a career, one can well imagine that Raymond Chaillan has many perfumery best-sellers to his credit. Moreover, he is the creator of Boucheron pour Homme, Anaïs Anaïs by Cacharel, Monsieur Couturier by Jean Couturier, Bleu Marin and Paradoxe by Pierre Cardin, YSL pour Homme and Opium by Yves Saint-Laurent, and also Jeunesse by Robert Piguet. What is more, Raymond Chaillan managed to pass on his passion for scents. Indeed, he is the father of the renowned Jean-Marc Chaillan.
