Bertrand Duchaufour

Entering the profession in 1985 at Lautier Florasynth in Grasse, Bertrand Duchaufour went independent in 2008 and became in-house perfumer at L'Artisan Parfumeur. Known for his incense fragrances, he created Avignon for Comme des Garçons, and Timbuktu and Dzongkha for L'Artisan. He also composes for Penhaligon's, Acqua di Parma, Amouage and Dior.

Twenty-Three Years of Anonymity

Bertrand Duchaufour began his career in 1985 as an intern at Lautier Florasynth in Grasse, and worked at Florasynth Paris and Créations Aromatiques. He created anonymously for Comme des Garçons, Acqua di Parma, Eau d'Italie, Amouage and L'Artisan Parfumeur, a collaboration that began in 1997 with Méchant Loup.

Incense and Travel

His name is tied to incense: Avignon for Comme des Garçons in 2002, Timbuktu in 2004 and Dzongkha in 2006 for L'Artisan Parfumeur. The last two belong to the L'Artisan series born in 2003 from perfumers' travels, alongside Jean-Claude Ellena's Bois Farine. Dzongkha came from a stay in Bhutan, Timbuktu from a trip to Mali, and Chandler Burr, in the New York Times, called him an “expert of shadows.”

In-House Perfumer at L'Artisan

In 2008 he became an independent perfumer and in-house perfumer at L'Artisan Parfumeur, where he has a studio in the brand's Paris offices. There he created Al Oudh and Havana Vanille in 2009, Nuit de Tubéreuse in 2010, and Traversée du Bosphore and Noir Exquis in 2015.

He also composes for Penhaligon's and for Dior, including Fahrenheit 0°. His recent creations include No Filter for Bêtenoir and Lead for CZAR, with Vincent Ricord, in 2026.
