His father, Peter Ellena, was himself a renowned perfumer. He worked in particular for the company Chiris, a perfume house that reached its peak at the end of the 19th century and trained the very famous François Coty in the art of perfumery. Similarly, Bernard Ellena's older brother is none other than Jean-Claude Ellena, an emblematic figure of contemporary perfumery, exclusive nose for the house Hermès from 2004 to 2016. His niece, Céline Ellena, is also a perfumer. As one can see, among the Ellenas, no one seems to escape the family passion for the world of scents.

Bernard Ellena chose to work for the company Symrise. This German company was created in 2003 following the merger of Haarmann & Reimer and Dragoco. It specializes in the production of flavors and fragrances. Today it ranks among the major players in its sector worldwide. Symrise has ambitious goals and intends to keep building its reputation. This is notably why the company acquired the American company Pivona in 2015 for the modest sum of $397 million. Thanks to the reputation of his group, Bernard Ellena has been able to work with numerous creative houses. He has notably created fragrances for Benetton, Biotherm, Davidoff, Esprit, Ferrari, Jacomo, Hanaé Mori, Jil Sander, Montblanc, Naf-Naf, Oriflame, Ted Lapidus, Van Cleef & Arpels and Versace. As one can see, Bernard Ellena is a highly prolific figure who enjoys expressing himself across very diverse styles.
