Yuzu

Yuzu is a citrus fruit native to East Asia. In fact, it is more precisely a hybrid between a wild mandarin and an Ichang lemon. Physically, yuzu resembles a small grapefruit. Its taste is a blend of lime, yellow mandarin, and orange. Its acidity is quite pronounced. Today, yuzu is mainly grown in Japan, where it is also called the “Japanese citron”. Yuzu is widely used in gastronomy, where it brings a unique tangy flavor. In perfumery, yuzu is introduced into other fragrances to achieve tangy, invigorating scents.

Yuzu, a highly fashionable trend

Yuzu belongs to the citrus olfactory family, alongside lemon, mandarin, and orange. Its notes are fresh, invigorating, and tangy. Both acidic and fruity, yuzu gives rise to refreshing and unique compositions. Used only recently in fine perfumery, yuzu appears as a new source of inspiration for perfumers. Like most citrus fragrances, yuzu is a volatile note, so it is often used as a top note. A fine tribute to this small Japanese citrus fruit is the fragrance Yuzu Man by Caron, which marks the house's first citrus fragrance. Yuzu is thus found in the top notes, used sparingly, alongside basil and verbena. In the heart notes, fig and mastic (a variety of pistachio) can be recognized, and in the base notes, sandalwood and cedar. The result is a very fresh, yet very masculine fragrance.

The pairing of yuzu with different olfactory families

Like its family, yuzu pairs perfectly well with woody and aromatic notes. For aromatic fragrances, which are mainly masculine, aromatic herbs such as thyme, lavender, rosemary, or basil are paired with yuzu. For woody fragrances, a woody or powdery base, such as sandalwood, patchouli, or oak, will generally be accompanied by yuzu notes in the top notes. Yuzu can also be found among great fragrances in a citrus-oriental or citrus-floral composition, as in Eau de Fleur de Yuzu by Kenzo. Here, yuzu is even found in the heart notes. Accompanied by green notes and citrus in the top notes, as well as white musk in the base notes, yuzu is subtly enhanced by floral notes with great transparency. The musk in the base notes brings a silky touch. The result is a subtle and delicate feminine fragrance, particularly recommended for summer.

A distinctive small citrus fruit from Japan, yuzu has only recently attracted the interest of perfumers. It brings tangy yet fresh notes. Paired with other olfactory families, yuzu proves to be a valuable asset in fragrance composition. It is mainly found in masculine fragrances and as a top note, but it sometimes creates a surprise by judiciously slipping into a feminine fragrance.
