Pure malt

Malt is a germinated cereal grain, which is roasted in order to release all of its aromas. A Pure Malt is a whisky made exclusively from malted barley. Barley is the cereal grain with the most significant aromatic palette. As for malting, it results from a simple operation that consists in industrially reproducing the development of a cereal grain, in this case barley. Barley is a straw cereal, from the Poaceae family. Barley, one of the oldest cereal grains, was consumed in antiquity in the form of flatbread or porridge.

The scent palette of Pure Malt

Pure Malt offers a wide palette of scents and varies according to its pairings. At its base, Pure Malt could be said to offer peaty, woody scents to which numerous facets are added. On the fruity side, Pure Malt gives off scents close to those of raspberry, dried fruits, or even scents reminiscent of citrus. On the gourmand side, Pure Malt develops scents close to caramel, honey, or toffee. On the floral side, Pure Malt offers scents similar to heather, hay, fresh flowers, or freshly cut grass. Finally, Pure Malt can offer tonalities close to barley grain, or even smoked barley.

Pure Malt in perfumery

Thanks to the fragrance A Men Pure Malt by Thierry Mugler, everyone knows that Pure Malt and perfumery pair wonderfully well together. Described as a peaty malt woody, this atypical fragrance offers scents that are both fruity and smoky. It should be noted that the Pure Malt fragrance edition by Thierry Mugler draws on whisky-making methods. Here, the maturation of the fragrance in barrels takes no less than 8 weeks, just like a fine whisky. At present, very few other noses or perfumers have had the audacity to use Pure Malt in perfumery. Some, such as L’Artisan Parfumeur or Hermès, with Épice Marine, have introduced touches of whisky into their compositions, but this remains rare.
