FloralMahonial
Mahonial is a Givaudan captive molecule, a green lily-of-the-valley note that gives density to floral compositions, with magnolia facets. Like every lily-of-the-valley note, it belongs to synthesis, since the flower yields no usable essence. It can be found in the heart of Dylan Purple by Versace, Casamorati Melodica by Xerjoff or Harib by Afnan.
A Givaudan captive
Givaudan lists Mahonial among its exclusive ingredients, alongside Rosabloom, Rosyfolia and Akigalawood: a green lily-of-the-valley note that brings floral density with magnolia facets. A captive is reserved for the perfumers of the house that created it.
Natural lily of the valley can be neither distilled nor extracted efficiently; its note is built with synthetic molecules, and Mahonial is used in the heart of a composition, where it gives a clean, watery and transparent lily of the valley.
After Lyral
Mahonial takes over from restricted lily-of-the-valley materials. Among them, Lyral, or HICC, is banned in European cosmetics by Regulation 2017/1410: no more placing on the market since 2019, no more making available since 2021. Perfumers therefore rebuild lily of the valley with other molecules, including hydroxycitronellal and Bourgeonal.
In perfumes
It appears in the heart of Dylan Purple by Versace in 2022, Casamorati Melodica by Xerjoff, Qasida Senses by FAAN and Harib by Afnan in 2026. For another Givaudan captive, see the Pomarose note.
