In the past, perfumery was much less developed than it is today. It was essentially built around the traditional Eaux de Cologne, essences valued for their freshness but sorely lacking in tenacity. Since then, perfumers have solved this problem and fragrances are now much longer-lasting than in the past. Likewise, the range of scents available to us today is far broader. Nevertheless, in the collective consciousness, freshness remains one of the public's favorite scents. This is why citrus notes are used in every possible way. But did anyone know that the fruit is not the only part of these trees to be distilled by perfumers? As proof, the mandarin tree is used for its fruit but also for its leaves.

The mandarin tree, a tangy and refreshing scent

The mandarin tree is a tree that, on its own, evokes one of the most beautiful times of the year: the Christmas season. Indeed, it is during this period that it bears its fruit: mandarins. The mandarin tree is therefore a hardy tree that produces small orange-colored fruits, with a subtle, pleasant scent and a tangy, sweet taste. Contrary to popular belief, even though the mandarin tree withstands cold relatively well, it is vulnerable to frost. It must therefore be grown under a greenhouse when it is too cool, particularly in regions with harsh winters. Originally, the mandarin tree comes from a rather warm part of the globe: the Far East. The Mediterranean region remains one of its main producing areas. Today, there are a great many different mandarins, both natural and hybrid. One of its derivatives even gave rise to the famous clementine.

The olfactory richness of Mandarin leaf

If perfumers use Mandarin leaf in some of their fragrances, it is simply because it is an ingredient that appears rather simple but is in fact extremely rich. Mandarin trees have evergreen foliage, dark green and glossy. This foliage is ideal for both feminine and masculine fragrances, as it produces a green, very refreshing scent. In fact, the leaves of this small tree also seem imbued with the citrus, fruity breath characteristic of the mandarin itself. The famous fragrances that contain this ingredient are numerous: Touch For Men by Burberry, XS Extreme by Paco Rabanne, Glam by Versace, … Perfumers are fond of it, and it must be acknowledged that Mandarin leaf blends wonderfully with the many floral scents they have in their olfactory palette.

The mandarin tree is an exceptional tree in terms of scent and perfumery. Each of its parts gives rise to a different essential oil, whether from its leaves, its fruit, or even the small white flowers that precede their birth… A true delight for the sense of smell.
