Citronella

Citronella: Powerful natural citrus notes Citronella, a highly fragrant grass with delicate lemony scents, is a beautiful Asian plant now also cultivated on the African continent. Mainly known for its many medicinal and culinary virtues, citronella is nonetheless a raw material of choice used as an essential oil in perfumery. The rare fragrances featuring citronella are mainly well-known masculine or unisex citrus fragrances for men, but also for women who borrow them!

Citronella: a grass with many powers!

Contrary to what one might think, citronella has nothing in common with lemon beyond the root of its name and the delicate scent released from its long stems when rubbed. Indeed, this grass with long slender leaves, native to Sri Lanka, has hardly any other botanical connection to lemon. Known since ancient times by Asian peoples, citronella was recognized as early as ancient Egypt for its many medicinal properties.

Now growing in many tropical countries, citronella is traditionally used in the Antilles to reduce fever, and in Africa it is said to be a powerful remedy against tuberculosis and malaria. This shows how highly it has been valued for centuries!

In Asian cuisine, it is indeed an essential component of traditional tangy dishes and features in many great recipes now imported into French territory. However, despite this delicate and distinctive scent, perfumers still use this original raw material very sparingly! But great names are finally taking an interest in it!

Citrus fragrances and citronella

Citronella has mainly been used since the 1990s in citrus fragrances for men. Particularly powerful and tangy, citronella essential oil literally makes the citrus notes explode to offer men fragrances that are both invigorating and refined! Monsieur Balmain by Balmain, created in 1990, is highly representative of the use of citronella in men's perfumery, as it pairs citronella with a wide variety of aromatic herbs (mint, rosemary, thyme…) to bring out warm spicy notes followed by woody notes.

That same year, IKKS by IKKS offered the same type of explosive citronella-spice cocktail, adding marine notes to open the fragrance toward greater freshness.

A few years later, drawing on this same beautiful pairing of aromatics and citronella, Chaumet homme by Chaumet even dared to add a few floral heart notes combined with white musk.

Of course, denying that citronella is particularly linked to the masculine citrus family would be heresy. However, noses are venturing into new territory to conquer, notably toward unisex fragrances and even feminine floral citrus scents. With its citronella top notes, the lovely green floral citrus Truth by Calvin Klein already showed women in 2001 that citronella could also feature in their most beautiful bottles!
