Pierre Berdoues

A perfume is like a musical chord, harmony results from a perfect composition of low and high notes. A perfumer is a composer, who plays with essences as a musician plays with notes. This is how perfumer Pierre Berdoues liked to describe himself. Coming from a long line of creators, he made perfumery a passion passed down in his family from generation to generation.

Pierre Berdoues, a creator at the heart of a great family of perfumers

Even though perfumery is a vast field, certain noses instinctively stir strong emotion, so celebrated are they for their history and their many creations. Berdoues is one of them. It all began in Toulouse, the birthplace of the Berdoues family and of the eponymous brand. Its story takes us back to 1902. Pierre Berdoues's grandfather was at the time a hairdresser and barber. In addition to the treatments he offered his clients, he had the idea of making an Eau de Cologne. This project immediately attracted keen interest, so much so that he opened a perfumery in the very center of Toulouse. Continuing his creation, his son devised an Eau de Toilette based on violet. Once again, success followed. From that day on, the love of perfume has been passed down from generation to generation within this family. As such, Pierre Berdoues spent 55 years of his life at the factory founded by his grandfather. Likewise, he in turn passed on this legacy to his daughter, Sophie, who has been running the company for more than 10 years. She embodies the fourth generation of the Berdoues company. The Berdoues perfumery now boasts more than a century of existence and has around a hundred employees. Its production has remained entirely French and the company still generates revenue of close to €16 million.

The unique expertise of Pierre Berdoues

When Pierre Berdoues began his career in perfumery, he started out in the wholesale trade of major-brand perfumes and professional hairdressing equipment. He ran this business with his brother Guillaume. Moreover, as the Berdoues company has always been very family-centered, his nephews, Guillaume's sons, also joined the company a few years later. It was not until the 1960s that Pierre took over the reins of the company and became its CEO. A creative yet also highly ambitious figure, he completely rethought his manufacturing tools and further industrialized the making of his perfumes. He automated part of his production unit and developed a more efficient research laboratory. Indeed, Pierre Berdoues has always placed innovation at the heart of his interests. Thanks to him, the house of Berdoues offers rare perfumes, authentic and singular blends. Pierre Berdoues therefore greatly contributed to forever inscribing the house in the history of perfumery.
