Who said that perfumers should have but a single passion for their craft and their love of scents? As it happens, Jean-Pierre Subrenat is also a fervent petanque enthusiast. A specialist in natural perfumes, he is also recognized in his sport in the United States. It is almost as if he had brought his Provençal origins back to life throughout his career, whether through his perfumes or through the practice of petanque. In fact, he even jokes that he nearly installed ceramic cicadas in the premises of his club across the Atlantic. So how did this Mediterranean man end up on the other continent making perfumes?
Jean-Pierre Subrenat's beginnings as a perfumer
Jean-Pierre Subrenat was born in the Grasse region. He admits that in his day, in the 1960s, people did not talk about university the way they do now. So while he had always been immersed in the world of scents because of his origins, it was “on the job” that he learned his craft. As a student, he took a summer job at a perfume company. However, he was far from creating his own fragrances and was instead employed to do cleaning work. It was only after six months at the company that he was finally able to smell his first raw materials. This fascinated him immediately, to the point that he made sure to be trained in the craft. Still, Jean-Pierre Subrenat remembers his beginnings as particularly difficult. For him, the profession of perfumer is especially complex at the start. Having to memorize so many scents and the name associated with each one is a real headache! For him, the best school of perfumery nonetheless remains contact with other master perfumers. He says he learned everything through exchanges with his colleagues and by letting time do its work.
Jean-Pierre Subrenat's career
It was at the age of 32 that Jean-Pierre Subrenat finally became a full-fledged perfumer. Having begun his professional life in Grasse, he left his native region to move to Paris, where he spent a few years. However, having completed a four-month internship in the United States, he had it in mind to go back. So it was in 1976 that he left to join the other continent with his family. There, he worked at various companies and signed his first major perfumes. In addition, one launch greatly helped establish his reputation: the emblematic Giorgio Beverly Hills. From then on, he took part in numerous projects until he finally created his own company. It is called Creative Concepts Corporation and has 15 employees. Far from the more commercial fragrances he used to create, Jean-Pierre Subrenat says he is no longer interested in large clients. He prefers to create natural perfumes intended for a select few. He currently works for about a hundred different clients but also creates custom perfumes for individuals on the side.
