Green orange

The primitive form of oranges appeared approximately 20 million years ago. At that time, the Chinese devoted themselves to cultivating their citrus fruits in the mountains of Asia. The word orange comes from Sanskrit (an ancient language of Asia) and means ju. As early as the 11th century, the bitter orange or bigarade was passed on by the Persians to the Arabs and became established in Sicily. Today, orange is the second most consumed fruit after the apple. It is cultivated in Spain, Italy, the Maghreb, Israel, and even South Africa.

Green orange

Even though it is not common to come across them, some oranges are green. In reality, oranges only take on their eponymous color when they are cold. If an orange stays green, it is because its temperature is very high (around 30°). Its chlorophyll thus remains dominant and the orange pigments do not appear. Green oranges are found mainly in Thailand. There, it is called “the Thai orange” and is mostly drunk as a fruit juice called naam som. The scent of the orange differs depending on whether it is a sweet, bitter, or green orange. Orange blossom and orange leaves are highly prized in perfumery. While orange was already known in perfumery, green orange offers new scents.

Green orange and perfumery

Green orange belongs to the citrus fruits, and thus to the Citrus olfactory family. Green orange combines sweet and tangy notes with fresh, lively notes. Green orange is less used than so-called classic orange. Nevertheless, it was the house of Hermès that brought it to prominence by naming one of its perfumes Eau d’Orange Verte. This fragrance is inspired not only by the scent of a damp undergrowth, but also by that of morning dew. Eau d’Orange Verte is regarded as a citrus explosion and is built around green orange. For now, green orange is not yet widely used in niche perfumery, but it offers new scents that have yet to be explored.

Green orange is striking for its color, but its history is that of the classic orange. Still little known in perfumery, it nonetheless gives off flavors that are at once sweet and bitter, tangy and fresh.
