What is Gurjan?

Gurjan is also known as gurjan balsam or gurjum balsam. It is a balsam, widely known in the Urals, Malaysia and Siberia. This plant, derived from a tree, can be found in forested areas, on the banks of a stream or river. Indeed, it requires damp soil and shaded ground. Its tree is characterized by small, irregular, fleshy yellow flowers. During its flowering period, Gurjan is widely used for medicinal purposes. Indeed, it contains a large amount of ascorbic acid, and aids healing. It is an excellent anti-inflammatory agent. The Gurjan used in perfumery comes from the resin of this tree, which naturally flows down its trunk.

Gurjan in perfumery

Gurjan is a natural resin produced by a tree of the species called dipterocarpus. Resin flows down its trunk when the latter is gashed or pierced. It can then be used as is (which is mostly the case), purified through another process, or steam-distilled to produce what is known as gurjum balsam essence. However, if this name means nothing to you, know that it is because Gurjan remains a very rarely used ingredient in perfumery. It is mainly used to fix the fragrance and improve its longevity.
