Boronia (Boronia megastigma) is a small evergreen shrub native to Western Australia, where it grows in coastal, humid areas. Its small, pendulous flowers are brownish-red on the outside and yellow on the inside. They give off a scent of remarkable complexity, combining floral, fruity and slightly spicy facets.
Boronia absolute is obtained by solvent extraction of the fresh flowers. It is produced in very small quantities, mainly in Western Australia, which makes it one of the most costly natural raw materials in world perfumery. Its olfactory profile is dominated by notes of violet, rose, raspberry and blackcurrant, with a warm floral depth.
In perfumery, boronia absolute is used sparingly because of its cost. It brings a floral-fruity complexity that is difficult to reproduce synthetically and fits into high-quality floral compositions, fruity chypres or floral orientals.
