Goji berries
Goji Berries, small red berries from China. Many perfumers travel the four corners of the globe to discover new scents. Travel and exploration are thus an inexhaustible source of discovery and inspiration. Among the most explored regions of the moment, Asia ranks at the top of the list. Many fragrances draw on distant Asian lands to deliver fresh, lively scents intimately linked to the history of traditional medicine. Goji Berries are no exception to this trend. Consumed in China for at least 2000 years, Goji Berries grow on a shrub, the common Chinese wolfberry, measuring one to 3 m in height. This hardy tree is slightly thorny and adorned with flowers, blooming between June and September. The fruit of this shrub, the Goji Berry, appears between August and October, and is recognizable by its red or orange color and its oblong shape.
The many therapeutic virtues of Goji Berries
Goji Berries are very rich ingredients and contain 18 different amino acids, numerous vitamins and 21 trace elements. Asians have thus used them in traditional medicine for several millennia. In the West, however, the consumption of Goji Berries is much more recent. It must be said that the marketing claims associated with them are numerous: “Tibet's secret of youth”, “Miracle berries”, “Smile berries”, and so on. Anything goes to make people believe in the miracle. The Goji Berry is mainly used to protect the liver, kidneys and organs of vision. Nevertheless, this product stimulates the immune system in general. It is also said to be effective in treating male infertility and slowing neurological aging.
The fresh, sparkling scent of Goji Berries
In perfumery, of course, Goji Berries are not used for their therapeutic virtues but for their scent. When dried, as they are generally consumed, they do not give off a very strong scent. Here, perfumers draw instead on their fresh odor. The Goji Berry is for now used in few fragrances, and expresses itself mainly in the top notes of compositions. This raw material blends wonderfully with other citrus fruits, such as lemon, grapefruit or bergamot. It gives them extra energy while softening their slight bitterness. Goji Berries are sweet without becoming too opulent. Fresh and lively, they revive the spontaneous femininity of the women who wear their fragrance. At Bulgari, Goji Berries are clearly showcased in the top notes of Omnia Coral. What is more, the bottle of this fragrance features the same orange-red color as the little berries in question. Quite a symbol!
