From small business to luxury empire

The history of Guess is akin to a success story worthy of a Hollywood film. And for good reason… it tells the story of four brothers from Marseille who left for Los Angeles to try their luck. Their project was to manufacture jeans. Yet at that time, denim fabric was considered out of fashion. To bring a fresh breeze to this trend, the Marciano brothers, founders of Guess, decided to combine European style with this fabric emblematic of the United States. The name Guess, meanwhile, was directly inspired by a McDonald's advertisement. It displayed the phrase: “Guess what's in the new Big Mac”. Guess was the word written in the largest print, and that is how it was chosen. Bolstered by their confidence and boldness, the Marciano brothers began by selling clothes in Los Angeles during the summer season. They came up with the idea of stonewashing their jeans with volcanic rocks. The idea was such a hit that they opened a second multi-brand jeans store in Los Angeles barely two months later! Paul Marciano, CEO of Guess, recalls that everyone tried to talk them out of it, but they had nothing to lose, so they went for it. Moreover, eager to make a name for themselves, they sent one of their creations to Bloomingdale's, the famous American department store chain. That is how the frenzy for Guess jeans came to life.

The inimitable style of Guess

Little by little, Guess managed to develop multiple clothing lines while accessorizing them with luggage, leather goods, eyewear, jewelry, underwear and perfumes. At the same time, Guess's renown reached far beyond American borders. Indeed, Guess is known for its many sexy advertisements and its glamorous ambassadors such as Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell and even Carla Bruni. Furthermore, Guess arrived in Europe in the 1990s and its revenue has since grown more than tenfold! We are now far removed from the small family business. The Guess group entered the New York Stock Exchange in 1996. It embodies the American way of life in its most elegant form, both in terms of fashion and perfumery.

Today, Guess has more than 1200 stores worldwide and each of its perfumes is distributed in more than 80 countries. Moreover, Guess is a company with heart that created the Guess Foundation in 1994 to raise funds for cancer research and to finance other charitable actions.
