Chopard

Chopard is a Swiss watchmaking and jewelry house that came to perfumery in the early nineteen-nineties. Founded in Sonvilier in 1860 by a twenty-four-year-old watchmaker, it has belonged since 1963 to the German Scheufele family, who gave it its jewelry side. Its perfumes extend jewelry collections, starting with Casmir in 1992.

A watchmaking manufacture from the Swiss Jura

Louis-Ulysse Chopard founded in 1860 in Sonvilier, in the Bernese Jura, a manufacture of pocket watches and high-precision chronometers. The house supplied the Tir fédéral and the Swiss railways, and counted Tsar Nicholas II of Russia among its clients.

Louis-Ulysse Chopard died in 1915 and his son Paul-Louis took over the manufacture; the headquarters moved to Geneva under the following generation. In 1963, the company was sold to Karl Scheufele, from a line of German watchmakers, and the family has held it ever since.

Jewelry and the Happy Diamonds signature

Under the Scheufeles, the house added fine jewelry to watchmaking and made it its main field. The Happy Diamonds collection, where loose diamonds move between two sapphire crystals, gave it an immediately recognizable signature.

Caroline Scheufele and her brother Karl-Friedrich now co-preside over the company, she on the jewelry side, he on the watch side. The headquarters is in Geneva, and the house produces its movements at its Fleurier site, in the canton of Neuchâtel.

The entry into perfumery

Casmir appeared in 1992 and is held to be the house's first perfume. Its name comes from a jewelry collection of the same name, and its fruity vanilla oriental bridges the orientals of the previous decade and the fruity perfumes of the nineteen-nineties.

The principle has not changed since: the house's perfumes are released as extensions of its jewelry lines rather than from an independent perfumery program, and the name of a piece of jewelry regularly gives its name to the bottle.
